For every college bound student, it’s very much up in the air as to what to expect next fall. For Grant Harper, a soon-to-be Campolindo graduate who will be attending UC Davis in the fall, the football program is another aspect of college that remains somewhat uncertain.

With the regular season winding down, the stakes have gotten much higher.

League championships and playoff positioning were on the line at many high school football fields Friday night across the Bay Area.

Ryan O’Neil, Campolindo

The running back ran for 85 yards and caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown as Campolindo bounced back from a stunning loss to Acalanes to topple previously unbeaten Las Lomas 31-14.

Football: Campolindo spurns Las Lomas with 31 unanswered points

Campolindo bounces back emphatically after losing to Acalanes a week ago

WALNUT CREEK — When Las Lomas scored first Friday night, on a 45-yard run by Elijah Lash with the game against Campolindo less than two minutes old, it appeared the Knights would be celebrating senior night in style.

But it took Campolindo only four plays and a little over one minute to pull even, and from that point the Cougars piled on with 24 more unanswered points in a 31-14 rout of the home team.

Las Lomas, ranked No. 11 in the Bay Area Preps HQ top 25, still holds a half-game lead in the Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division over Campolindo and Acalanes. The Knights are 3-1 in league play and 8-1 overall. Seventeenth-ranked Campolindo is 7-2 and 2-1 in the DAL. Acalanes also is 2-1.

But if next Friday’s regular-season finales go as expected, there will be a three-way logjam atop the DAL-Foothill standings. Campo will be heavily favored to beat arch-rival Miramonte at home. Ditto Acalanes, which hosts Alhambra. Las Lomas is finished with league play but visits Walnut Creek rival Northgate.

Of course, when it comes to the North Coast Section playoffs, it won’t really matter that the three teams are tied. Campolindo is Division II, Las Lomas plays in D-III and Acalanes is D-IV. Wins next week should guarantee high seeds for all three.

Campolindo prevails in showdown with Rancho Cotate as Ryan O’Neil scores three touchdowns

MORAGA — Campolindo coach Kevin Macy was concerned that his team might be worn down by Rancho Cotate’s power run game in Friday night’s showdown between ranked teams.

But No. 14 Campo flipped the script and settled some scores in a convincing 34-14 win over No. 16 Rancho that featured the home team’s run game and run defense and some yeoman-like work in the secondary by safety Jack Daugherty.

“We knew we had to come out with fire and intensity and we did,” said Daugherty, who broke up a handful of pass attempts. “The secondary, we really haven’t been proven this year and we really proved ourselves tonight. The box was strong and we won in the trenches.”

We had two separate coaches celebrated last Friday night in Oakdale and San Diego — Trent Merzon and Sean Doyle — who reached their 200th win, which is the total it takes to gain entry onto the all-time state list. We also are now including Campolindo of Moraga’s Kevin Macy with 200 career wins, but it turns out he already was well past 200…  (read full article here.)

Last week, we started the weekly process of identifying our projected seeds for the North Coast Section playoffs, despite still being in the first half of the season schedule. Following section seeding criteria, especially head-to-head and common opponent results, we will rank teams accordingly each week, and discuss the criteria used and how these seeds may change in the near future.

We started the process last week by seeding all eight teams in each division,…

No. 14 Campolindo 21, Hayward 0

Campolindo (4-1) bounced back from a loss to McClymonds last week, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter and playing strong defense after that. Hayward suffered its first defeat after a 3-0 start. Both of Campolindo’s touchdowns in the first quarter came on passes from quarterback Grant Harper. The first was a 7-yard pass to Ryan O’Neil, the second was a 46-yard hookup to Joey Schmidt. O’Neil had a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. Hayward begins West Alameda County Conference play next Friday by visiting Arroyo. Campo continues its non-league schedule by hosting No. 16 Rancho Cotate.
